Shadow Gaps | Details That Create Seamless Interiors
The Fitout AcademyWalk into a well-detailed space and it's hard to pin down exactly what's doing the work. It isn't the finish schedule, and it usually isn't the furniture. Look closer at the edges — the skirting line, the door frame, the ceiling junction — and the trim you'd expect to see simply isn't there. In its place is a thin, deliberate void.
That void is a shadow gap. It's a recessed reveal — a narrow negative space, typically 10–20mm, left where two surfaces or materials meet instead of covering the junction with a cover strip, cornice, or architrave. Done well, it disappears from a distance and reads as precision up close. It's one of the clearest signals in architecture that a space was detailed rather than simply built.
This piece breaks down what a shadow gap actually does, the main types worth knowing, how to execute them, and where they sit in a fitout scope of work.
What a Shadow Gap Actually Does
A shadow gap is, structurally, just an absence — a controlled reveal instead of a physical trim piece. But that absence does real work:
- It hides tolerance, not just seams. No two materials meet perfectly. A shadow gap gives movement, shrinkage, and site tolerance somewhere to go without a visible compromise line.
- It reads as more expensive than trim. A cover strip announces "this junction needed help." A shadow gap suggests the junction was resolved before it became a problem — which is a more sophisticated impression even when the underlying labour is comparable or greater.
- It creates continuity between materials. Plaster into stone, timber into drywall, floor into wall — a shadow gap lets each material stay visually pure instead of being interrupted by a trim profile in a third material.
- It's a lighting opportunity as much as a joinery one. A gap deep enough to hold a strip of LED turns a junction detail into an ambient lighting detail, without adding a visible fixture anywhere.
The Six Types Worth Knowing
Ceiling perimeter detail — a recessed reveal at the wall-to-ceiling junction, replacing the cornice or coving entirely. The ceiling plane appears to float, separated from the wall by a thin dark line rather than resting on a moulded edge. This is the detail with the single biggest impact on how "resolved" a room reads, because it removes the one junction almost every room still shows. It needs a plaster stop bead set correctly before the final skim, and it reads best under warm, low-angle light where the shadow line stays crisp rather than washing out.

Recessed skirting shadow gap — a flush metal profile at the wall base, set back from the floor so the wall appears to hover just above it. This replaces a projecting timber skirting board without leaving the wall base unprotected — the metal edge still takes the knocks. It's especially effective with stone or micro-cement flooring, where a projecting skirting would interrupt an otherwise continuous floor-to-wall material story.

Frameless door detail — a continuous recessed frame around the door leaf, set flush with the surrounding wall plane instead of standing proud of it. The door reads as a plane cut into the wall rather than an object applied to it. This is one of the higher-cost items on the list — it typically requires a purpose-made frame system rather than standard door furniture — but it's also one of the most noticeable, since doors are touched and looked at constantly.

Wall panel joint — a recessed reveal between adjacent wall panels, used in place of a butt joint or decorative trim strip. It organises panel modules into a clear rhythm while giving each panel room to expand and contract independently. This detail matters most in large-format panelling — timber veneer, plaster panels, leather-clad panels — where a tight butt joint would eventually show movement as a hairline crack or gap.

Floating joinery gap — a concealed setback beneath fitted cabinetry, where the base of a unit is recessed from the visible face. The cabinet appears to hover rather than sit on the floor, even though it's fully supported behind the recess. This is a standard high-end joinery move for kitchen islands, media units, and vanities, and it pairs naturally with integrated toe-kick lighting.

Stair to wall detail — a stepped recessed channel that follows the tread and riser line where a staircase meets an adjacent wall, replacing the conventional timber wall stringer. Because the channel steps with the stair, it needs to be set out and fabricated to the exact stair geometry before installation — this is not a detail that can be adjusted much on site, so the coordination has to happen at shop-drawing stage.

Material and Execution Considerations
For specification, a few things determine whether a shadow gap reads as intentional or as a construction defect:
- Gap width and depth. Too shallow and the shadow disappears in flat daylight; too deep and it starts to look like an unfinished junction rather than a designed one. 10–15mm is the common working range, with deeper gaps reserved for ceiling perimeters where more shadow is wanted.
- Stop beads and setting-out. Plaster and drywall shadow gaps rely on a proper stop bead installed before the final coat — this is where the crisp edge actually comes from, not from the finishing trade cutting it in afterward.
- Metal profile gaps (skirtings, panel joints) use a proprietary aluminium or brass channel, which gives a cleaner, more durable edge than a plastered reveal and is the better choice anywhere the base will see contact — corridors, stair edges, kitchen toe-kicks.
- Colour of the reveal. A dark or black-anodised profile deepens the shadow artificially and holds its line even in bright light; a profile finished to match the adjacent surface disappears more completely but is more dependent on natural shadow to read at all.
Where Shadow Gaps Belong in a Fitout Scope
Shadow gaps are a coordination item well before they're a finishing item. A few things worth flagging at the specification stage:
- Decide gap locations before framing and first-fix, not during finishes. A ceiling perimeter gap, a stair channel, or a skirting reveal all need blocking, stop beads, or profile carriers built into the substrate — retrofitting a shadow gap after plastering is expensive and rarely as clean.
- Coordinate tolerances across trades. Joinery, plastering, and flooring all need to agree on the same gap width and the same finished floor and wall levels, or the reveal will vary visibly room to room.
- Flag lighting integration early if any gap is meant to carry an LED strip — cabling and driver locations need to be planned before the channel is fixed, exactly as with any other integrated wall lighting.
- Mock up the detail on site wherever possible, in the actual ambient light of the space. A shadow gap that reads crisply under office lighting can go flat under a north-facing window, and the fix is almost always a depth or profile-colour adjustment rather than a bigger change.
